Day Trip To Portuguese Bridge, Debre Libanos Monastry & Gelada Baboons
A day trip to the Portuguese Bridge, Debre Libanos Monastery, and the Gelada Baboon habitats comprises three of the most scenic and culturally rich sites located about 110 km north of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Portuguese Bridge, near Debre Libanos, is a historic stone bridge believed to date back to the 17th or early 19th century. Perched above a dramatic gorge carved by the Jemma River, it offers stunning panoramic views. During the rainy season, a waterfall cascades beneath it. Despite its name, many believe Ethiopians built it using local materials. Visitors can hike nearby trails for spectacular views of the gorge and surrounding escarpments.
Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, is one of Ethiopia’s most revered religious centers. Nestled in a lush valley surrounded by cliffs, it remains a vital pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians. Nearby, a sacred cave marks where the saint once meditated, and pilgrims collect holy water. The 20th-century church features beautiful stained glass and murals, offering visitors deep insight into Ethiopia’s enduring spiritual traditions.
