Dassa-zoumè Hiking Adventure: Nature, Culture & History
Nestled in the heart of Benin, Dassa-Zoumè is nicknamed the "city of 41 hills". A hike in this region offers a unique blend of nature, culture and spirituality. The route begins with an immersion in the heart of verdant hills, whose unique shapes create a spectacular landscape. As you walk, you'll discover small, traditional villages where the warm welcome of the locals allows you to connect with local life.
Day 1: Arrival and settling in at the MAKTUB eco-farm.
Relaxation and a day out in town (optional)
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Hiking in the Hills of Princes and Princesses
Explore the hills of Dassa-Zoumè with visits to the historic Egbakokou site, Yaka Palace (Igbo-Idaasha kingdom), and traditional dwellings. Discover the shakparo workshop, the Ogou community residence and largest Ogou temple in Benin, plus medicinal plants. Enjoy panoramic hill views, visit Fish Hill, explore the resistance millstones, and end at the sacred Igbo’Nla forest (gate).
Day 3: Discovering the Fulani Camp
Discover the history of the Fulani in Dassa-Zoumè, visit their typical architecture, and experience their way of life and daily activities. Take part in the preparation of Peulh cheese and enjoy a tasting, with opportunities to meet Fulani women. Photos are allowed with consent. End of visits, followed by lunch and departure for Cotonou.
