Day 1: Arrival and Journey to Danakil. Arrive at Semera Airport and meet your guide for a short briefing on Ethiopia’s geology and your tour plan. Drive toward the Danakil Depression, stopping in Afdera for lunch and a visit to Lake Afdera and its salt mines. Continue to Ahmed Ela, one of the lowest points on Earth, where salt caravans gather before their long journeys. Spend the night camping under the stars at 125m below sea level.
Day 2: Ahmed Ela – Dallol – Erta Ale. Early morning, drive to Dallol to explore its vivid salt domes, sulfur pools, and geysers — a truly otherworldly landscape. Visit the salt canyons and see locals extracting salt by hand and loading it onto camel caravans. In the afternoon, continue to Erta Ale, enjoy a light dinner, then take a short walk to the crater to witness the active lava lake. Overnight open-air camping near the volcano.
Day 3: Erta Ale – Semera – Flight to Addis Ababa. Before sunrise, hike to the crater once more to witness volcanic activity in the early light. Return to camp for breakfast, then drive back to Semera, with an optional swim at Lake Afdera and a stop at its hot springs. In the late afternoon, take your flight back to Addis Ababa.
