Andasibe & Palmarium Rainforest Escape
Andasibe National Park is the closest and most accessible rainforest from the capital. When combined with the Palmarium Reserve, these two exceptional sites offer an impressive diversity of wildlife — from the largest Lemur, the Indri, to some of the smallest species like the Mouse Lemur. Both are ideal destinations for observing Madagascar’s endemic Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, and Insects. Botanists are particularly drawn to this region, as a large majority of plant species found here are unique to the island.
Day 1: Travel east from the capital through the scenic highlands to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park.
Enjoy a guided rainforest walk in search of the Indri and Diademed Sifaka, followed by an evening night walk to spot Mouse Lemurs, geckos, frogs, and sleeping chameleons.
Day 2: After breakfast, head to Mantadia National Park, a pristine primary rainforest. It is home to iconic species such as the Indri, Diademed Sifaka, Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur, and a rich variety of endemic Birds and Butterflies. You may also encounter the brilliantly colored Baron’s Mantella frog and several species of orchids (in season).
Enjoy a picnic lunch and return to the lodge in the afternoon.
Day 3: Morning visit to the Analamazaotra Special Reserve, where you have a high chance of observing the Indri and hearing its hauntingly beautiful call echo through the forest. Other species you may encounter include the Diademed Sifaka and several smaller Lemurs.
In the afternoon, enjoy some leisure time or a relaxed stroll through Andasibe village.
Another optional evening walk offers the chance to spot additional nocturnal creatures.
Day 4: Continue east with a scenic boat ride to Palmarium Reserve.
Explore this private sanctuary, famous for close lemur encounters, including Indri, Red-bellied, Black-and-white Ruffed, Crowned, and Black Lemurs, plus colorful geckos and chameleons.
At dusk, visit Aye-Aye Island to spot the rare and fascinating Aye-Aye in its natural habitat.
Day 5: Spend the morning exploring the reserve again, enjoying easy walks and more rewarding wildlife sightings. The afternoon offers the opportunity to visit a nearby traditional fishing village along the lakeshore.
An optional evening walk within the reserve can be arranged before dinner.
