Itinerary

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Day 1: Fly from Addis to Mekelle and start the tour at 8:30 AM. Drive 7 hours to Askoma, base of Erta Ale Volcano, with stops for lunch and photo stops along the way. You’ll stay at Askoma until sunset, have dinner, and then hike for about 3 hours to the volcano’s top. Erta Ale, meaning “smoky mountain” in Afar, is one of the hottest places on Earth and offers an unforgettable view of molten lava.

Overnight on the volcano.

Erta Ale, Ethiopia

Day 2: At 5:30 AM, witness the volcano’s daytime activity before trekking 3 hours back to Askoma (meaning “red sand” in Afar), passing desert trees and volcanic rocks. Enjoy breakfast at the camp, then head to Lake Afdera for lunch and a swim in the salt lake. Continue to Hamedila, a small village of about 700 people, for overnight stay.

Dallol, Ethiopia

Day 3: At sunrise, drive to Dallol, one of the most astounding places on Earth and the second-lowest point after the Dead Sea. Explore colorful salt springs, sulfur and potassium fields, salt mountains, oil lakes, and salt mining areas.
